Man killed near basketball court in Mueller-area neighborhood park, APD says

Police are investigating the slaying of a man at a Mueller-area neighborhood park in East Austin, officials said at a press conference Wednesday night.

Based on information from witnesses, police preliminarily think it was an isolated incident, with no threat to the public.

After 9 p.m. Wednesday, police responded to a report of a shooting in the parking lot near the basketball courts at Bartholomew Park, near East 51st Street and Berkman Drive, Police Department senior officer Wesley Belcher said.

The unidentified victim was found inside his car with one gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to a hospital, Belcher said. The man did not survive.

Police did not provide a motive for the shooting and did not specify whether they had identified the gunman.

The Police Department could not be reached for comment as of Thursday morning.
